Ceci Canales, MD, MPH is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology & Perioperative Medicine and was inaugural co-president of the Minority Housestaff Organization (2021-2022). Her parents and seven brothers and sisters immigrated from Mexico and she was the first in her family to go straight to college. She was a non-traditional medical school applicant, who spent years developing research and educational programs prior to entering medical school. Throughout medical school and residency she continued to develop her academic career focusing on patient centered outcomes research, publishing in various anesthesiology journals, presenting at national and international conferences. As a faculty she was awarded a Resource Centers for Minority Aging Research (RCMAR) National Institute of Aging (NIA) pilot grant and selected as a Scientist in the Center for Health in Minority Elders (CHIME) for her work on postoperative cognitive dysfunction. She’s also continued community engagement programs by mentoring students from underserved communities towards a path to college and careers in STEM. Born and raised in Los Angeles, she knows the ins and outs of the city with dozens of micro-communities that are always changing. She is a great resource for learning how to navigate the LA traffic and where to get the best real deal street tacos.
